Handy first principles sentencing decision

R v JW, 2025 SCC 16: Judges may consider the time it will take to complete rehabilitative programs when deciding the length of a custodial sentence, provided (a) there is a sufficient evidentiary basis and (b) the sentence does not extend beyond the range of what is fit in the circumstances.

Very handy 'first principles' case, both for the fundamental purposes and principles of sentencing (paras 38-46) and for the standard of review in sentence appeals (paras 47-52). A common refrain in advocacy advice is to cite one recent and authoritative case, rather than several dated lower-court decisions. This one will be useful on this front for trial and appeal lawyers alike.
