Resource spotlight: Fighting anti-BLack racism in the criminal justice system

Did you know that Legal Aid Ontario publishes practical guides for practitioners on fighting anti-Black racism in the criminal justice system?

As part of its Anti-Racism Action Plan, LAO assembled an expert panel to draft two guides for lawyers representing Black clients.

The first guide provides a comprehensive, one-stop shop for resources on the history of anti-Black racism in Canada, considerations of anti-Black racism in criminal law, a practitioner’s guide to allyship, and local community resources.

The second guide is a detailed bail "how-to", with a client interview tool, a discussion of Section 493.2 of the Criminal Code of Canada, practical tips on how to draft submissions on secondary and tertiary grounds, and a discussion of bail reviews.

Chris Rudnicki and Theresa Donkor each helped with the creation of these expert guides.
